Learn more about the benefits of purchasing and using green label certified products to your health, the environment, and your children’s future.

ABOUT SINGAPORE GREEN LABEL

Launched in May 1992, the Singapore Green Labeling Scheme (SGLS) is a governed body to endorse industrial and consumer products that are considered eco-friendly or those that have lesser negative environmental impacts. SGLS is administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) – the region’s most established eco-labeling scheme with presence across 28 countries and more than 3000 unique products.

Much has been said about the importance of caring for the environment. Unfortunately, this has led to false claims and abuse of green-washing. SGLS regulates this issue and grants certifications to reputable companies selling only truly green products.

As a consumer, these are some of the benefits and assurance of purchasing Green-label certified products:

Recognition
The Green Label is widely recognised by ministries, governmental agencies, procurement and industry professionals in Singapore and regionally.

Credibility
Certified products meet stringent standards in being environmentally friendly.

Differentiation
The Green Label makes it easy for purchase and procurement by those who choose products on environmental grounds.

Reduced Environmental Impact
Choosing Green Label certified products will contribute to mitigating the impact a product to the environment.

Save on Energy Consumption
Achieve long term cost savings by conserving on energy, water, and waste management with sustainably manufactured products.

Healthier and Safer Living Environment
It’s no news that Singapore is a health-conscious country. Given that Green-label certified products are required to go under stringent testing against harmful toxins and chemicals, users are guaranteed to live a healthier lifestyle.

A Greener Future
Caring for the environment as early as now paves a brighter and greener future for the next generations. Reduced carbon footprint, better air quality, and reduced flora depletion are just some of the benefits your children may enjoy if you continue to make “green” choices.

MORE RELEVANT INFORMATION (From Green Label Website)

Is the Singapore Green Label recognised internationally?

Yes, the Singapore Green Label is recognised internationally. The SGLS Secretariat has certified more than 2,600 products in more than 22 countries. The Singapore Green Label is a type 1 eco label. What exactly is a type 1 eco label? The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines type 1 eco- labels as a voluntary, multiple-criteria based, third party program that awards a license that authorises the use of environmental labels on products indicating overall environmental preference of a product within a particular product category based on life cycle considerations.

How do you define a Green Product? Does the Singapore Green Label Logo certify that my product is Green?

The SGLS Secretariat recognises green products based on a life cycle approach. It addresses the main environmental impact of a given product and places limits for compliancy in order to reduce these impacts. In order to certify a product under the SGLS, a product must be placed under one of the SGLS product categories and meet ALL the requirements for the specified product category. The SGLS Secretariat does not certify products based on their energy efficiency or any other single environment benefits alone. The overall aspects of a product including raw material composition, manufacturing process, health impacts and product disposal, are considered.

What is the difference between the SGLS and the Singapore Green Mark scheme?

The SGLS is administered by the Singapore Environment Council, which certifies green products. The Singapore Green Mark scheme is administered by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and certifies green buildings. The BCA recognises the Singapore Green Label and awards points to Green Label certified products. These points contribute towards the building attaining Green Mark certification.
